Sandra Steinbrecher
I am an independent freelance photographer based in Chicago working on documentary and portrait projects. Much of my early photography education took place in Ron Gordon’s film and print lab. Printing my own images became an integral part of the way I approach my work.
My most recent projects for Chicago Public Schools have taken me into some underachieving high schools to document their challenging “turnaround” years. Currently I’m photographing life at Fenger High School in Roseland. Last year I was hired for a similar project for Harper High School in Englewood.
In February 2009, one of my photos won a national contest. The prize was a trip to Vietnam and that work resulted in a solo gallery show of the black and white images I shot there. Recently, my photos have appeared on the White House website and in the Economist magazine.
